Vision Boards- How To Make Your Dreams a Reality

personal growth Apr 21, 2019
I've done vision boards for almost five years now. Although I really started with it when I was young, just without knowing it.

I have always wanted to move to the US for as long as I can remember. As a kid, I would always write and talk about moving here. I cut out pictures and put them on my walls, watched American movies and tv shows.
I submerging myself in it.
And I remember the feeling I had. The feeling and the belief that I knew it was going to happen and I felt it was already my reality.

I just knew it.

When we hear the phrase vision boards, we think of a board with random pictures and words on it.
And YES, a lot of that is exactly right, but I'm going to show you that it doesn't have to be like that.
There might be an other option that works best for you. There's really no right or wrong way of doing it.

Before you start putting together your vision board, I want you to take a moment and answer these two questions...

(ps. the free download at the bottom of this page will help you with this!)

What Do You Want To See In Your Life?

And Why?

It's important to be clear with what you want in your life.
It doesn't have to be material things, it can be anything you want.
How do you want to feel?
How much do you want to make?
What kind of relationships do you want in your life?

Anything.
Think of it as a catalog that you are ordering from, you know before online shopping took over.
Nothing is off limits except things that are out of your control. Like other people's feelings and actions.

As you are going over the things you want to see in your life, recognize if you are hitting the breaks on your dreams.
Recognize thoughts that have to do with limiting beliefs, such as...

"I could never make that kind of money."
or
"It will take x amount of time before I can get there."

You are the one who creates your own limitations and restrictions. Not the universe, God, the higher power, or whichever you believe in.

You are the one who tells yourself how long things should take and if something is possible or not.

There are no limitations besides the ones you create in your own mind. Actually, it's your ego. Your mind is capable of anything as long as the ego doesn't interfere.

Your ego creates a false reality, making you think you are not enough. It's driven by fear.

For example, I wanted to pay off all my bills and debt with my passion.
My why was that I never wanted to feel anxiety every time a bill would come in the mail and a 9 to 5 job made me feel trapped.

(Accomplished by the way!)

But I always thought that I couldn't do it.
I thought I had to work long hours for someone else, live paycheck to paycheck. That money was hard to get and only the smartest and most talented could live off their passion.

What a bunch of bull.

But that's the lie we keep telling ourselves.

Enough with that.

So how to create your own vision board?

Throw a vision board party!

Get excited! Even if it's just you.
Put on some music and get into it.

Feel the power of what you can accomplish.
What you can make a reality.

This part is to address the questions I received from people over on Instagram.

Like I said earlier, you don't actually need a board.

When I first started five years ago I did a collage on my computer and then used it as my background image so I could always see it and be reminded.

Let's call that a digital vision board.

To find out what works best for you, think of where you would get reminded of it.

Would it be hanging on your wall?
On your computer screen?
Your phone screen?
In your journal?

How does something stick for you?

For me, I like visuals but I also write about it in my journal so I use a combination of a board and writing.

A vision board is different from a bucket list or a to-do list.

With a vision board you surrender your visions to something that is greater than you and taking steps towards it. Remember how I said earlier in this post how I submerged myself with the thoughts of moving to the states? I was living it and acting like it was already my reality.

A list is all about you actively making something happen. You say and you do. Not much else needs to happen.

Think of a vision board as a clear picture of how you want to live your life. What you want to see, feel and experience.

Another way of thinking of it is that a vision board is about letting go of control so that things can start to shift for what is supposed to happen. It might not happen the way you've pictured it, but it will happen the way it's supposed to. It's about surrendering to the unknown and trust that if it doesn't happen for you, it might not be the right path or the right time for you.

Now if you are on a budget and you want to use a physical board such as the one in the pictures, you can:

  • directly write on the board (try with different colored pens)
  • use post-it notes
  • use junk mail to cut out specific words and create phrases related to your vision or how you want to feel
  • ask friends and family for old magazines
  • print out from your computer

There are many different ways and no wrong way of doing it so just have fun and be creative!

For Your Vision Board To Be Successful You Need To...

1. Believe.
Let go of limiting beliefs.
You have to believe from the bottom of your heart that this is going to happen, to the point that it feels like it's real.
Which brings us to the next point...

2. Feel it.
You have to feel it.
The moment you start to feel bad or doubting yourself you need to do your best to come back to the way you feel when you think of what you want in your life. Always make it your priority to feel good and have fun! I can't emphasize enough how important your mindset is.

3. Be grateful.
Be grateful for where you are and what you have right now.
Be grateful for the experiences that led you to where you are today. If you don't feel grateful now and only wait for the things that you want then nothing will happen.

If you find yourself saying, "I'll be grateful and happy once I get X,Y and Z," - catch it! You have to stop and remind yourself of the blessings that you have in your life right now. If you don't, you'll never feel grateful no matter how amazing your life ends up.
Recognize the miracles that are already around you.

4. Be patient.
Don't give up.
Keep going. Keep reminding yourself that if it's meant for you then it will happen. When it feels hard and like something is working against you, make it an even bigger priority to feel grateful.

5. Surrender.
Let go of all expectations and control. If you don't surrender you won't recognize the little signs that tell you the right actions to take. You'll miss them. The universe gives you little nudges to get you where you want to go.
Make sure you listen.

I didn't realize my vision had become my reality because I'd been so focused on keeping my mind right.

Every morning I make sure I start my day happy and grateful. That is what makes us open to receiving. But don't worry if you have an off day, we all do. Just do your best to get back to feeling good.
